Tekken 6 on the PSP may be leaner than its console version, but it delivers the Tekken experience admirably. The basic mechanics work just like the PS3/360 version (which you can read about right here). You won’t find a true port, however. The game omits the excessive and often boring campaign mode from the console version, and the backgrounds and textures aren’t as sharp and refined. But despite hardware limitations, Tekken 6 PSP closely resembles its brethren: great visuals, demanding gameplay, and a roster brimming with personality.

Network matches run on ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure, which means you play matches locally without the benefit of online matchmaking. In my experience, matches over ad-hoc ran well, but suffered from sudden pauses when the game was resynching the players together. During a resynch, matches come crawling to a halt as if a lag spike suddenly interrupted both players’ matches — a jarring experience that negatively affects the flow of the match. Loading times between bouts are a little annoying, even when the game is installed on the PSP.

Personalizing your character is fun, but purchasing costumes and accessories is tiresome. They’re just too expensive. Even in Gold Rush, a mode that rewards you with currency for each successful blow you land on your opponent, you have to grind through multiple sessions just to afford the cheapest costumes/accessories.
